Lets Build A Game!

Post by Sebastian Lawe »

We have enough talent here to build any game we want. We have programmers, musicians, artists, writers, and visionaries.

Lets build a game of sorts, it doesn't matter what. You can either suggest a game idea, volunteer to be part of this (while saying what you would help with), or do both!
Be sure to also include your timezone.

Programmers:
  • Sebastian Lawe
  • Entity
  • Bionicnacho
Musicians:
  • Sebastian Lawe
  • StreetLights
  • Gtarmetro
Artists:
  • ZeroOfBlades
Writers:
  • Gtarmetro
  • ElectroYoshi
  • Totaldile
Visionaries (idea makers):
  • ElectroYoshi
Basic game ideas:
  • A game influenced by peoples music.
  • An MMORPG of sorts.
  • 2D Platformer
Programming engines:
  • Unity
  • Java
  • Flash
  • Web GL
As this list evolves, things will become more detailed. As well, make sure you can count on following through if you plan on volunteering.
The plan is that we can eventually finalize a team, game engine, and a game idea/concept. From there, we can start work on an actual product.

I think this is an epic idea! I'll volunteer for programming and writing (what's visionary?), however I don't think I'll take part in any sort of ambitious project... I've been a part of many groups like this and they always fail if the first project is too ambitious :P

At least for our first game or two as a group, they need to be really simple. Like I'm not kidding, really simple. Maybe they won't be amazing, but at least it'll weed out those of us who aren't really dedicated.

And maybe not quite Pong or Breakout simple, it could still be a cute little game with a minimalist storyline, but it needs to be something we can reasonably complete in a month or less. The goal of these few games wouldn't necessarily to have an amazing game, but just to finish something. I think that would be a great first goal: finish three small games.

EDIT: I'm really excited about this :D

If it's a 2D game, I really think we should go with Java. Likewise if it's a 3D game, Unity. That's just me though. I have some experience with Flash, and none with WebGL (although I do know javascript).

If you want, I could help with music, and writing. I have a lot of ideas for simple games in the Unity engine.

I could help with writing, but I may or may not actually be able to. See, school is becoming really busy for me with finals approaching, and I'm kinda pressed for free time right now.

I'll try to dream up some potential ideas though. :P

I'd say some sort of 2D platformer might be good.
Maybe it could involve jumping over gaps, and things could slowly get faster over time.

I'd love to help out in the programming sort of thing, and I do agree that it needs to be something pretty simple.
A 2D platformer like Sebastian said would be a really cool thing to make.

On the engine, I really haven't had any experience with anything other than Unity so I can't really help in that decision, although, if you do decide to use something like Java, I'm sure I'd be able to learn in the process as I believe Java is not too different from C# language-wise. I don't think we should use flash whatsoever, though.

I suggest if we go with Unity that we write it in C#.

I agree. A platformer is a good place to start.

Unity recently released an awesome GUI building API in version 4.3.4. If its anything similar to Winforms, we could use that GUI api to build a game too.

I heard quite some time ago that Unity was working on its GUI system but I wasn't aware that it was ready. I've had to resort to using 3rd-party GUI tools in the past to use within unity like NGUI because the past solution was really weird to use. I remember martin saying about Atmosphir that they had to have a GUI-guy that specializes on that stuff to be able to do what they did because it's a really painful thing to do.

I'd love to help out in any way I can as a writer!
I may be able to contribute in small parts to the artwork depending on what kinds we're looking for, but my skills primarily lie with words :) .

And my timezone...uhhhhh....
UTC+12?

oh yeah, I'm GMT - 5.

YEY GUI. I remember the old one was simply terrible.

Personally, I'd be more excited about making a 2D game, but I'll still be a part of a 3D one if that's what we end up doing.

Remember, unity recently released a 2D tool-set so it is no longer just 3D. They officially support 3D now, natively.
Haven't tried out the 2D aspect though, I'll have to try it out.

If you don't mind my saying so, the Donkey Kong Country games have a lot of levels set with rather unusual settings:

Not that it would be easy to make a level set in a hurricane. xD But still, I think if we were to make a 2D platformer, the level design would really benefit from "random" scenarios such as this one. Assuming it's within the engine's capabilities, of course. :P

I wonder if we could make a platformer influenced by a persons music.
All one would need to do in order to have a new level, is use a different song.

It would kind of be like seeding in Minecraft, except you use songs instead, and the level might end once the song is over.

We could also make it an endless freerun platformer where you compete for the leaderboards! That could be a mode on it; endless mode.

Maybe there should also be some sort of "Time trial" mode. A lot of platformers have that, so why not include it here?
