Nintendo 2ds Discussion Thread

Post by ElectroYoshi »

Last month Nintendo announced that the Nintendo 2DS would be joining the 3DS family of handhelds. It can run all games for both the original DS and the 3DS, but lacks the clamshell design of those systems and the stereoscopic 3D effect of the 3DS. This is because it's directed at younger children.

My opinion on this thing can be found in the form of a blog post. But what do you think?

I'm willing to cut it some slack because they at least thought it out, but I still must question their mentality.

It's for the people who want to have a next-gen DS and play the games but didn't want to pay extra for a 3D feature they didn't care about.

I fully understand their intentions. In fact, it seems with the basic packages I've seen with a few products and consoles these days this sort of thing may become more and more common. However, the price cut doesn't seem quite large enough to justify it. I doubt this was what they were going for, but to be honest even though I would be all for getting the cheaper hand-held if I were interested; I would still likely pay the extra 40$ for the ability to fold the device. As, scratches and dings would at some point become a problem - a clam-shell design simply makes more since.

However, I don't really have any intentions to purchase one at the moment. Currently I only would ever use mobile games if I am traveling long-distances, as otherwise I am usually engaged with conversing with people.

You know, I like to think of Nintendo as one of the only companies who isn't a money-grabbing group of idiots, but...really? How is this necessary?

Because I would easily buy the 2ds over the 3ds because I'd never use the 3d, and it is £50 cheaper than the 3ds?

Soooo...this is for thrifty gamers who don't like 3D?

Never mind then.

Well, I'm not exactly going to pay £50 extra for a feature I'd never use...

How many people don't use the 3D anyway? Is there a huge demand for this?

Plus, it's loads more oriented for younger kids. Flip screens=easy to break.

I understand their intentions, but the concept was very poorly executed.

Can you explain? I don't really understand what you mean by that.

Some people don't like cheese, so they order a plain hamburger.

Ohhhhhh, I gotcha.

But was it really necessary to nix the clamshell design for a slate design? Like phantom said, scratches could become an issue after a while. Besides, the fact that DS systems have two screens is the whole reason they have that design, so what the frack?! Can't they just use more durable material to hold it together?

I suppose, looking at it a more durable material would drive the price up, a folding mechanism would drive the price up and they knew with excluding a feature that they needed to get the price down as far as they could..

I agree, trying to lower the price was probably the reason for the "slate" design. The truth is, though, it doesn't matter why they nixed it; having two screens and not being able to fold it is still not very practical.

I don't know if they would even need to use more durable material in order to keep it. They never did anything like this with the original DS, and a TON of kids under the age of 7 had one, so what the crap!?

Haha, I have no clue :P

Obviously, those who want one will buy it and those who don't won't buy one :) No real use complaining about it as it will ether be quite popular and give incentive to continue producing it, or not.
