The UGC genre really has taken quite a blow in recent years. GameGlobe went public about a year ago, and look at it now. It's shutting down barely a year later.

There are 5 UGC games I can name off the top of my head right now:
  • Atmosphir
  • GameGlobe
  • Playcrafter
  • Jumala (or whatever it was called)
  • Barbie and the Magic of Pegasis
Out of all of these, the only one that is still alive is an atrocity that should've disappeared years ago. It's like there's a curse preventing UGC games from lasting or something...

Edit:

Well, I think Atmosphir could've learned a lot from GameGlobe and vice versa. My ideal game creator would be something that had everything those two games did right and fixed everything they did wrong. I'd pay good money for that.

Just wait 'till you get to be in my grade (although that really refers to school more than life as a whole)...

Ummmmm, yeah.

Back on topic, is GameGlobe's shutdown solely due to the money issues it's been having?

Pretty much, the community was pretty active.

Huh... with how active the community was, you'd think they could've gotten it solved...

How about Project Spark? Some parts look like a direct ripoff of GameGlobe to me, but I really like their "brain" logic idea.

I found this really interesting article awhile back about lack of communication being a big problem in video games now. I actually addressed that on the GG forums at one point, but NOPE, NO ONE LISTENS TO THE NEW GUY.

I'm probably not gonna get involved with that. You need an Xbox or Windows 8 PC to run that. I'm gonna be getting a PS4 this generation and am planning on downgrading my laptop from 8 to 7 soon.

Bad news, and good news, in the form of new server development. I was an avid user of Gameglobe. It sucks now. But life is tough, and it's beyond our power. I've asked for them to give us the source code. They haven't answered yet, but the way it seems, I doubt it would be a yes.

Though, who I am to say that pure luck hasn't paid off before?

I hope they give you the source code, but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

If any of you are still keen on level creation, I still need people to help build maps for my game. Its mostly drag and drop stuff, and only requires Visual Studio C# Express (which is free).
