Is there a way to make it so an area causes damage over time? (like a room where while you're in it, you take one damage per second or whatever)

no
but you could do it in a dodgy way with spikes on the floor that do a small amount of damage every few seconds

Another design question: Is there a way to make it so the longer a person survives, the more points they get.
