It's sort of like when you stumble on the weird side of youtube. It's messed up, but in a creative way.

To add to this, in regards to My Little Pony. Culturally, it seems to be challenging the term "Masculinity" and is altering what is generally accepted from genders. Which is great! I feel that any medium that is altering us to be more accepting is very beneficial to us as an ever changing mass. Although, that doesn't mean that people who don't like the show are against those ideals. I don't watch it for the same reasons I don't follow Dr. Who, Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, they aren't my cup of tea.

I don't have anything against "furries", but I think a lot of the issue is their insistence to call themselves "furries". Why not just say I like anthropomorphic animals? It's a bit of a mouthful, but somehow saying I'm a "furry" instantly brings my mind to the stranger demographics. The furries need better marketing that is to say. They really need to define themselves in a way that separates them from the dark side of the fandom-or for that matter, maybe they don't need distinction.
You could even call me a furry I guess, although I would deny to it. I enjoy watching representations of anthropomorphic animals, but I wouldn't classify myself as a furry.
So that's my two cents.

Every fandom has a name for its members. Dr Who has Whovians etc.

Yes, it applies to most fandoms. I don't know of many ways to reconcile it either.
There has to be a word to describe it, but some words makes it sound like you're describing another race. Like I never say I'm a Whovian, I say "I like Doctor Who.". But, you know. It's mostly a mental preset.

Eh. I'm not really bothered. If people don't accept us then we might as well BE another race.
Pretty much all of my friends have been accepting, and the ones that weren't didn't really know much about the fandom/only knew about the sexual side of it.
