Leo takes a file relevant to where Freya and Damien were out destroying Arbititrix towers.

The Intelligence and Army of the Order of the Saeva
-------------------------
PROJECT RESUSCITATE (CLASSIFIED DATA)
-------------------------
From: Kajiwara T ([email protected])
To: The Director ([email protected])
Subject: Sit-Rep on the Energy Synapse Towers

Master,
As you know, we have been under sustained attack recently. I am not quite sure who these people are or how they are getting past our defense but they are the biggest threat to this project to date. If Arbi is not sustained via the energy impulses provided by these towers she will never have full strength, and we will lose the ability to contain her. If these towers continue to fall then this will be a failure.
I will not sugar coat this, Master. Arbititrix is not a friend or an ally of the Order. The only reason we managed to get her in the first place was because we had aid, and that was during one of her extremely rare hibernation periods. It appears that the mage we originally found to capture her was killed in the detonation of the United States; this means we must do our best to keep what we have now.
We've seen what she can do when she is not under our control. We are not here for world domination. The detonation of America was not intended or approved by anyone of significant rank- I do not need to tell you this, and is not the ulterior motive. Just letting her go would be fatal.
I request that you along with the other board members come to meet me at the project headquarters, located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. I will not give more specific directions over e-mail; the exact directions can be obtained from one of my operatives who will contact you upon arrival in Japan. Please understand the importance of the situation.

Your sincerly,
T. Kajiwara
Project Resuscitate Lead,
Saeva Defense Minister of the Eastern Hemisphere

Leo read the e-mail aloud.
"What do you make of this?"

please understand

"It means that when those towers go down, we've got a pretty big fight on our hands. Sure she'll be weakened, but she's still essentially a goddess. Maybe we should organise a trip to Sapparo to find out more about what's going on..."

"Ungh. Why do goddesses have to be assholes?"

~~~~~~~~~
Even in the car going at 100mph, there was essentially no breeze, and if there was it was similar to the woft of hot air you get when you open an oven. On your face, constantly. The dust was making everyone's lungs hurt, and their skin was so dry you could get a chisel and shatter it. Freya's burn mark was also particularly stinging at this point.
Crappy generic music was playing on the radio. The 'poppiness' of the songs was a strange contrast to the arid desert like conditions outside. But nobody cared, they weren't paying attention. They'd taken down 2 of the towers so far without too much problem. This time, they knew the Saeva was going to be on their case - and the third tower was going to be especially guarded. It was still another 50 or so mile drive- but that half an hour opens up a lot of opportunities for the Saeva to stock up their mercenaries.
Freya drinks the last few drops from her canteen, and then throws it weakly on to the car floor. With a parched, croaky voice that sounded like it was being rubbed with sandpaper, she turns to Damien.
"Shit's going to be real, now."
Damien nods. "We'll need to carefully plan this one. They won't get distracted by anything."
Damien feels his phone vibrate. "Heads up! We've got signal." He gets the phone out of his pocket and passes it to Freya. "Get Harrison over here ASAP."
Harrison was enjoying a cup of tea, staring at the new hole to China he had created with his ridiculously strong acid. He picks up the phone and his eyes beam with delight. He'd been meaning to call her earlier.
"Ooohohoohoh, Freya, I was just about to call you," Freya was a surprised that Harrison would actually want to check on their progress. "I just found the most fabulous new tea straight from-" Never mind.
"Yeaah, Harrison, I think tea can wait. We need you over here."
Harrison puts down his tea carefully on the desk, and sighs tiredly. He leans back on his chair.
"Is that so?"
Freya drags her hand down her face. She thought he'd take it a little more seriously.
"Yes, it is so. We're in a bit of a pickle, as you'd say. We have one last tower to do, and we're gonna need a little bit more manpower and technology to get us through this."
Harrison tuts and waves them off, as if they could see him.
"You managed the other two, can't you manage the last one?"
"What, I... no?! This time, if you hadn't realised, they will have pretty much the entire Saeva mercinary force on that project over there?" She looks over to Damien exasperated, who, without looking at her, grimaced in empathy of her pain.
Harrison does the Neil DeGrasse Tyson hands and gives in.
"Just call me when you're there, I'll go and get some supplies. I guess I could use some product testing." And with that he hung up.
Freya breaths deeply as she practically chucks the phone back at Damien.
They pull over to assess the tower. Damien is about to put the phone in his pocket before it rings again.
"Hello?" He asks. Freya couldn't hear the person on the other end of the phone so she only heard half the conversation.
"Ok b- Wait what?" Damien says and pauses to listen, growing visibly more distressed. Eventually he throws the phone to the ground in anger. "Fucking hell!" He shouts and kicks the remains of the phone down a cliff. He sits on a nearby rock with his head in his hands.
The return of the silence was rather strange. With the winds constantly whipping her face before, the noise of the wind was music to her ears, although now it seemed that she really did miss the quiet after all. And the heat was staggering from where she was standing- she could even feel the heat of the dusty rocks beneath her.
Freya was standing with binoculars, pretending not to hear any of Damien's conversation. She thought that it was probably nothing, just a random phone call. Everyone gets those, and besides, they hadn't had much contact with the outside world for a long time. The confines of the remains of America was a whole different world. Suddenly, she hears a smack on the ground, and puts down the binoculars. Maybe not a random phone call then.
She turns around and gets a hefty load of dust to her face which was carried by the wind. Freya coughs loudly and gasps as she fixes herself. Opening her eyes once again to the arid, almost yellow light, she sees Damien, legs over cliff, on a rock, with his head in his hands.
"D-Damien?"
She stares at him for a moment, taking in what he had said. She nods slowly.
"Right," she says, before throwing her hands in the air. "Right! And... and how do we know this? Who called you?" Frantically, she paces back and frth with her hands on her head.
Freya quickly nods solemnly, and without saying a word, picks up the keys splayed along the
floor and turns toward the car.
"I'll drive. Think things over." She gets into the car and starts it up, and places her hand
outside the window. "We really didn't think this through," she mumbles to herself as she
stressfully twiddles her fingers.
The small drive they did have was slow and excruciatingly long. 15 minutes into their journey
toward the towers, they were stopped by a ring of Saeva Class IV tanks- these monsters were
armoured beyond anything they'd ever seen before, and the turrets, all of which were ominously
pointed at them, looked like they'd attached powerhouse chimneys to them. No getting out of
this.
A stern-looking man came through the middle of the tanks, wearing a white suit.
"Step out of the car, and line up in front of me. Failure to do exactly as I ask will result in
your rather painful death," the man said smugly. "Oh, but not before you see the pain, and the
misery and the insanity that we can bring about our... hostages." He laughs loudly, holding his
chest. An unidentifiable Saeva soldier came out holding a laptop with a live feed of the
hostages. They were ruthlessly buckled and bloody. They'd already been beaten by their captors.
Before long he is back to his old self. He claps his hands together loudly. It sounded like a
gunshot.
"Weeell, let's cut to the chase shall we? I believe you both know why it is you are here
today." He begins to stroll around, his hands intertwined with another. He puts on a mocking
brave face. "Ooooh, look at us! The freed captives from Project Lotus! We vanquished Gauntlet
and now we will see our vengeance!" His face quickly drops from the clown like happy expression
to a serious and, almost angry one. "You see, we here at the Saeva don't take too kindly to our
projects being tampered with. Especially by a bunch of retched, disgusting and filthy rejects
like you two, especially." Freya closes her eyes and clenches her fists, an action which
provokes a few of the soldiers to prime their energy rifles and point their harsh beams of red
light directly at Freya's head, chest and legs. She opens her eyes and and goes back to her
neutral position- or as neutral as she can get in a situation like this. The soldiers put down
their guns, however reluctantly. She could see in their eyes they wanted some action. They
wanted blood. But if they even thought about shooting either of them for their own personal
satisfaction, well, they'd be no better off then their two dead bodies on the floor.
The man clears his throat.
"Did it never occur to you that something like this would happen? That if you just went around
crashing down Saeva towers that we wouldn't notice?" He puts on his clown face again. He seemed
to like doing that. "Ooooh, that giant tower that we spent millions on and is essential to one
of the Saeva main projects just fell down!? Who cares!?" He rushes forward. "WRONG!" Freya
jumps back, startled. "I honestly, honestly, cannot believe that you think that a mass
organisation, that spans the entire world, would not be able to keep track of a few..." He
forms his fingers into air quotes. "... "vigilantes" trying to destroy one of their, if not the
main project the Saeva work on. Pathetic.
"We planned Project Resuscitate for a very long time. Even when Dr. Gauntlet was working on
Lotus, we were still working on the fabrics of this. The grand revival of Arbititrix. With her
power we can do anything. She can change the very fabric of the Earth. And she will be ours,
and... well, that's just about it really. People tried to claim her before, but they locked her
away because she was too powerful. Unlike them, the Saeva have balls." He breathes in through
gritted teeth. "Well, you've had your fun."
He happily turns toward the laptop that one of the soldiers was holding.
"Well, enough of me. Now, I believe it is time for us to make a deal. Our Director has
personally taken the time out of his very tight schedule to meet you here today, I'm sure you
understand. He's gotta fly all the way across the world tomorrow, for much more mportant things
than you horrid vermin." He spins back towards, them with a pouty face on. "So, pwease be nice
to him, okay?" He begins to walk back where he came, leaving behind a trail of scorching dust.
Freya was physically shaking with anger at this point. During his speech the two of them had
been tightly shakled by both the hand and their feet. To the floor. The soldiers were jeering
them. She turns her head to Damien.
"I guess you get to meet your telephone buddy now," she says bitterly.
The man walks up to the Director, his presence oddly powerful but mystical at the same time.
"The stage is yours, Director."
The man steps down from his office area, and his features become more distinct due to the brighter lightning.
"Thank you, now, away with you." He says to the guards.
"But sir, surely you'd want some prot-" The guard begins to say, but is silenced when the man holds his hand up. "I'm confident that they won't hurt me. Especially him." He says gesturing to Damien. He steps into the light some more. First off, the most glaring feature is his animal ears. He is an antho. Second, the "man" looks too young to be in charge. In fact he doesn't look much older than Damien.
"Been a long while, Victor." Damien notes. "So instead of being dead, you've took to murdering innocents instead, hm?" He says, once again strangely calmly.
"The detonation of the US wasn't my decision. And the explosive wasn't powerful enough to wipe the whole country. Just the important parts. Whereas we didn't plan it, we definitely made use of it. By now you know we have operatives inside almost every government in the world, and the US was and still is one of these countries. Since the US was put into a crisis, we simply slipped into power by manipulating the media." Victor explains.
"No offence, but why the fuck did you bring my family into this?" Damien asks, growing in anger slightly.
"I had to make sure you had some incentive to come here without destroying the final tower. I know what my guards have told you, but you've put me in a very difficult position here. If this tower goes down, we lose control of Arbititrix. And our sensors indicate she is near a densely populated area. We simply don't need unnecessary casualties." Victor continues to explain.
"Unnecessary casualties... Was Kris an unnecessary casualty?" Damien clenches his fist.
"Kris' death was unfortunate. He was a good friend to me when we were inside gauntlet's facility, but he was too big a threat to our plan at the time. And don't think I won't have you killed either." Victor wanders round to a desk with a laptop on it, and checks some charts.
"But... Why? Why are you doing all this?" Damien asks.
"Because these 'humans' disgust me. Just look what they did to us. Kept us to rot. Kept us as slave labor. I worked my way up the ranks, albeit unfairly, but now all the higher execs in the saeva are post-incarceration anthros who have been through the same as we have. I plan on utilising Arbititrix to eradicate every one of them. The hired guns that escorted you here don't know our plans. They're just hired guns, like I said.
I'm doing this so anthros can have a better life, because regular 'people' don't deserve what they have." There is a long pause as Damien takes the information in.
"I want to offer you places in the Saeva. Both of you. Help me with my cause and I can guarantee a better life." Victor offers.
"Piss off." Damien says bluntly.
"Hm... You don't share my ideologies." Victor says dissapointedly.
"Like hell I do?! Mass murder?! What the fuck happened to you." Damien shouts "Fuck you. How the hell did we used to be friends."
"You leave me no choice." Victor says solemnly. He gets out his radio. "Kill the hostages."
Three distant gunshots are heard.
"I warned you I wasn't afraid of killing any of y-" Victor's sentence is cut off by Damien pulling a gun from his jacket and shooting Victor in the chest. Damien rushes up to victor and stands on his wound. "You're going to die from blood loss in roughly 2 minutes, which is plenty of time to make you hurt as much as possible." He says and throws the gun to Freyia. "The soldiers will have heard that. Make sure no one gets up here."
He turns back to Victor.
"Now, where is the permanent shut off switch for this thing." He says and presses his heel into Victor's wound.
"If... If only you could have accepted what-" He is cut off again by a punch to the face.
"I asked you a fucking question now answer it or I'll stick a knife in your eye." Damien says with pure aggression to his voice.
"My office. Log on to the computer. Use the keycard." He says in pain. Damien picks him up by the collar and drags him to the desk in the office. "Shut down the tower." Damien orders him. "NOW!"
Victor struggles to enter the shutdown sequence. The tower powers down and components detach and fall to the ground, shattering on impact and killing a numerous amount of Saeva soldiers.
Damien throws Victor to the ground.
"I... I did this f... For you you know... You and kris... She's weakened now s...so you can kill her. But d.. don't expect her n..not to kill as well..." Victor says and stops breathing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flynn's phone buzzes and he shouts to the others. "Tower 3 offline!"
Before they could celebrate, an icy chill envelopes the building. She had found them, and she was on her way.
For a split second the heat of the wastelands in which Freya stood halt to a stop. The ever flowing trails of fiery dust settle to the ground, a perfect camouflage against whatever dreadful thing is about to happen. The wind scuttles away into hiding, shrieking in fear.
For a split second Freya feels the full force of what they had done. This monster is free. And they were the ones who had done it. Was it really all for the best? Or were the chains that the Saeva held over her safer after all? Was there another way? Perhaps destroying the towers wasn't a good idea. Perhaps instead, they should have used the towers to their own benefit. Take out the Saeva and their ideologies. Leave them to the dust, amongst tens of millions others who lost their right to life in the blast.
Leo breathes in slowly as everything came flooding back. He would always try to suppress anything to do with her. Nothing good ever came of it. And somebody always, always died. If they didn't die physically, the endless torment acting against their poor, imprisoned mind may as well have ended any chance they had at a normal life anyway.
"They've done it," he whispers. "She's out." He looks towards Flynn who looks as still and as cold as the dark sky lurking outside. Flynn's experience with the goddess before just like the many other things that caused him to retreat inside his mind had reached out with its dirty claws and scratched him. Over and over again.
Leo rises from his chair and ran towards the window. The entire world looked as if it was the setting of a noire film. Putting on his favourite jumper, he solemnly walks towards Harrison's room, feeling drained. All of his energy just seemed to get ceaselessly sapped from his life-force. This was not good.
The light of Harrison's lab was the only sense of haven that there was possible to have right now. It was the perfect shield to the outside world. Harrison's face dropped as he store the state Leo was in. He looked like he hadn't slept for weeks, while running a marathon each and every day.
"Dear God, old chap," Harrison breathed warily. "What in the devil has happened to you? Do you need some tea? Lemons? I have plenty of b-"
"No, Harrison... she's... she's here... right now..." The words felt heavier than a bag of bricks, slipping out of his mouth slowly and sloppily. "The... towers, they... they destroyed..." Harrison sharply gasps and immediately begins to pace the room.
"I see. Yes. Yes, of course it was going to happen. We should have planned ahead, we just sent them on their merry way and hoped for the best but we never really... well..." He stops to ponder for a moment. "I didn't think the Saeva would let them get this far. I was absolutely sure we'd have to intervene there somehow but..." He shakes his head. "We don't have long, Leo. I don't know what she's doing to you but it's not good."
Leo was becoming more and more unfocused, and with his balance failing him he fell to the floor.
"I just... feel so weak, Harrison..." His eyelids were half-closed. Harrison rushes over to him to further investigate. But he couldn't tell, because what was happening to Leo was caused by something greater than science. Nothing Harrison could do would stop Leo from suffering under Arbititrix's oppression. He shakes Leo.
"Where's Flynn? Is he in his room? A-and Acacia?" He was becoming increasingly worried now.
"Flynn... my room, but... he's... he's..." Harrison stopped him to save his energy. Flynn was relapsing again, no doubt about that.
"And Acacia?"
"Sleeping... She... was awake for 24 hours..." Leo actually manages a laugh here despite everything. Lifted some weight off of Harrison's shoulders, as, just for a moment he felt that there was still a lot they could do. After all, they'd gotten rid of her before. Now they would just have to do it again. Harrison administers some adrenaline to keep Leo's heart-rate up. He couldn't risk anything.
"I'll be right back," he mumbles as he scuttles off to Acacia's room. It was the closest after all. He opens the door, and the handle clashes with the wall, waking her up. She didn't look much better than Leo at this point. Good start.
"Harrison... can you put the heating on? It's absolutely freezing! And like, come on! I only just managed to get to sleep and you're already waking me up? Like that's not cool! Did Flynn not tell you I was sleeping? What's so important that you need to wake me up, like it's been 24 hours and I haven't slept at all!" Her amount of energy is surprising despite everything. All of a sudden she looked as wide-awake as ever.
"They destroyed the last tower, or rather, they deactivated it, however... well, now Arbititrix is free to do as she pleases. There's no shackles holding her down anymore, and she's coming this way." He opens the curtains, and barely any light came in. The pounding snow obstructs the view even more. Acacia gets up and looks out of the window. She frantically looks between Harrison and outside.
"Where's Flynn? Where's Leo, what's going on Harrison?" Her speech was erratic.
"I don't know about Flynn. Leo told me that, well... he's not doing too well. And Leo's in no better state. Arbi seems to have done something to him to completely sap him of energy... I just don't understand..." Almost instinctively, Acacia runs towards Flynn's room and sees him just like many times before in a ball in the corner of the room.
Flynn, curled up, was being spoken to. Inside his head, the tainted words of a demon were being conveyed to him.
"I know you as you know me, as i tear this world asunder. You will rest eternally, under the wrath of thunder."
It showed him images of all his friends, all his love ones dying due to the effects of what it was going to do.
"The towers may have fallen and my strength may be hampered, but what I do to you, my friend, your mind will become tampered."
Thoughts flooded his mind. This thing was going to kill everyone he knew. What could he do? Nothing. He had been told all his memorable life by the saeva that he was worthless, that he couldn't do anything right.
Something snaps inside him. A cold fury that he had never felt before. He wasn't going to let it happen, not anymore.
He stands and walks over to Acacia, hugging her. "We're going to have to kill this thing, but promise me something. Don't get involved in anything we are doing. Just... Stay here. I don't want to lose you too..."
