And, I was partially right.. I think.
The earliest usage of the image seems to come from a 2001 motivational/storytime blog, called vijayjha-- which is kinda bizarre.
Although after hunting around online, I found newer, much larger versions of the image.. which kind of suggests to me that a larger original existed somewhere. Probably a royalty free site, maybe a purchasable stock photo site.. Who's to say.
I do think that they look heck-a out of place next to the in-game character models..
