I have an i5 gateway laptop with 8 gigs of ram.

We must have similar computers then mine might be Dell but it's also i5 and 8 gig!

I5 and 8GB here.
Difference is it's acer and it came with 4GB of ram.

Full specs:
Intel core i5 2450m
8GB of ram.
AMD Radeon HD 6650m
Speakers that have a 80% chance of being better then your laptops speakers.
17.3" 1600x900 screen.
640GB 5400RPM HDD

It does games decently fine.
And the battery life isn't that bad either for a 17.3" (4 hours without any sort of gaming)

Bought a 'multimedia' computer, it's 'okay'

intel i7 3770 3.40GHz (4 cores)
12GB of RAM (2x4GB and 2x2GB)
NVIDIA GeForce GT640 (not the best GPU, might upgrade in ~4 months)
64GB SSD (yep, windows is on that SSD... just 2GB left.. eww)
2TB HDD
HP 2311x (23", I like it)

8 gig of DDR3 ram at 1300mhz
Nvidia GeForce 9800GTX+ (2.5gb ram overclocked to 1600mhz) [I'll be upgrading this to a Sapphire 7870 OR 7970 soon]
200GB HDD
500GB HDD
Digihome 19' monitor + CTX 15' [soon to be 3 19' monitors]

Ram is supposedly very cheap to buy right now. You may be able to bump up your ram.

Later. I would like a new GPU first before I bump up to 16 gig. Plus I have a second machine which needs a case, a PSU and a monitor to set up (I'll use it as a server/studio PC)
