2d Animation?

Post by Miniike »

I'd like to learn a bit of animation for an idea I have. Any suggestions? I'm considering Flash.

I've delved a little bit into 2D animation, across a few mediums. Of course flip books and drawings are the cheapest to start out with and they help practice replication and getting timing right - but if you mess something up it is a lot longer of a process to see the mistake as well as to fix it. There are some cheep software that let you do simple stuff, but like you said Adobe Flash is a good one (I used it quite a bit.) The price sets it quite high, but you can get the trial or maybe look into the older Creative Suites prices. A guy who helped me a lot was YouTube user JazzaStudios - look up some of his Flash tutorials, he talks about lip sync, layer organization and vocals as well! Just stay at it and keep working :)

EDIT: I just checked and saw Jazza has a drawing channel..
Here is him doing a simple Key-frame animation!

My Recommendations-
Paid: Flash or Toon Boom
UnPaid: Pencil, Synfig, and some other alternatives.

2d animation is easy to learn, its the drawing part and animating that's hard to do, good luck.

also i suck at animating, I'm still trying to learn it so don't ask me for advice. ;_;

Just out of curiosity, do you have a tablet? Flash works fairly well without it (I don't have a tablet with me either) as the smoothing effect that you can turn up to a fairly ridiculous amount really helps mouse drawings!

Even if flash smooths it out, tablets REALLY help, I've just gotten one and they make things so much better, I would reccomend one.

Yeah, my brother has one and I've used it a few times for flash - it is very helpful! If you are getting further in to Flash as a like thing it would be quintessential, however as they are quite costly perhaps something to work up to as you are getting into the swing of things.

Pencil works OK, but I'd like to try a few others before I decide what I want.

By the way, my "project" is a satirical YouTube cartoon. It's working title is "Swirl".

EDIT: Also trying Synfig, though it's alot more complicated than Pencil.
