Last I played it, it seemed to be getting pretty good. It had a proper integration of vehicles, and a wide variety of npc's.

I'll be honest though, it was always too laggy for me to play.

Oh, now I see.

Yeah, money is always an issue. But why are we just now being told this?

It was obvious since they required membership to publish levels.

No, they removed the membership, which meant that they literally had no way of making money.

Hmm... Well they DID try every single freemium model out there. I left that game when I went to the forums and saw the subscription forum post, after my levels were all thrown to the trash. I felt so disregarded since it was open beta yet they didn't even send a e-mail to their users informing of such a major impact.

I've put in a request to make the game open source. A hopeless request, perhaps, but maybe by some chance it will catch on.

I hope they hear before it's too late. (kind of what happened to Atmo, but Atmo was downloadable too so it's less fatal, but for a browser game it would be neessary if someone were to revive it)
However it seems improbable because of the weird Square Enix Launcher (that I beleive it's just a disguised Unity plugin with metrics).

Yeah, it's pretty improbable, but I'm hoping against hope they will hear it. Given the source however, wouldn't you be able to launch it without a browser?

With many modifications, yes. It wouldn't be as simple as "delete the code that connects with plugin".

I try really hard to stomp around on the decisions of game developers, but if there's one thing about Gameglobe's shutdown that I don't get, it's this:

In the announcement, Xenon said that they tried "every angle to keep GameGlobe going".

And they did try every angle.

Oh, except this one:

They were doing microtransactions very very wrong. The approach outlined in this video should've been quite obvious, as it gave everyone an equal opportunity to play, and then choose to pay for optional content. But they were turning into a "free-to-play-unless-you-want-to-do-anything" kind of game.

Atmosphir went through the same thing. At first the microtransactions were handled pretty well, but then Halsey came out with this whole pay-to-play and drove everyone off.

My point is, The approach to Microtransactions outlined in the video should've been tried. If SE had taken that approach, GameGlobe would probably not be on the brink of shutting down.

There is a Steam group.

Hopefully I can get Steam soon so I can join.

I saw it coming ever since they removed membership. I never really got to play anyways since it never worked on mac.

It seems these kind of games based on user generated content are all going downhill.

Minecraft is doing very good... that counts as user generated content in some cases, right?

I just went on there and they still took the time to display these week's Weekend Mix. It's more depressing than anything really.

Yep, that one died as well. Pretty quickly, too.

Eeeeeh. Not really, to me. I'd describe a UGC-based as a game that couldn't live if there were not a constant flow of people, well, creating content. The real base behind minecraft isn't really content creation. It's just building stuff.

Minecraft really has no way to die. Servers down? You can still play survival and creative in solo player.
