Children Of The Machine- Prelude

Based around the RPG thread/Children of the machine. I'll add new chapters whenever I can be bothered.

Chapter 1- Freedom lost.

"Can't sleep?"
Silence.
"I know how you feel. It's painful, I know. In fact it's all I know."
Still silence.
"You have to say something. What's your name? Or what name did they give you?"
"I... It's Damien..." Damien brings himself to say.
"Okay. I'm Kris. Looks like you'll be my room-mate."
Damien still doesn't say anything. He remains curled up in a corner, softly crying.
"Here. I'm not that hungry." Kris says and passes Damien the rest of his food ration.
"Thanks..." Damien says weakly. "I'm not that hungry either though."
There is silence for a while.
"I know you've probably forgotten pretty much everything, but tell me what you do know." Kris asks him to try and get him to a calmer state.
"I don't know. I'm called Damien. I'm 14... I was born on the 27th june... That's it really..."
"That's fine. Well, you're older than me." Kris tells him. "We're not the only ones in this room. There's a girl called Katie and a guy called Victor."
"I... I don't... I'm not really good with meeting new people... I mean..."
"So you're a little shy, so what?" Kris reassures him. "You're doing fine now."
“Hm...”
The door to the bunkhouse opens. “Hi Katie.” Kris says.
“Hey. Who's this?” She asks.
“He's called Damien. Be nice to him, he's a little shy and has just been through the procedure.” Kris replies.
She goes over to Damien who shuffles away against the wall.
“Hey, I don't bite.” She tells him. He lifts his head up to look at her. “How are you feeling?”
“I...” He says and then stops.
“It's ok. We've all been through what you have.”
He manages a weak smile.
“I like your eyes.” She says.
“R...really? Thanks, I guess...”
“Where's Victor?” Kris asks.
“He's on night duty tonight.” Katie tells him. “Hey, looks like he's fallen asleep.” She says, looking at Damien. “The bed would have probably been a better place to sleep.”
“Yeah. So what do you think?” Kris asks.
“What do you mean?” She answers with another question.
“About him. I mean, neither of us were like that when we went through it.”
“I don't know. Maybe he went through a different experiment. He looks pretty much distroyed emotionally.” Katie says.
“Hm. Wonder why he's so shy.” Kris says.
“I don't know that either. He's cute though.”
“What do you mean? Like cute cute or... You know... love cute?” He asks.
“Not cute cute.” She says, going slightly red.
“Oh! Well it's good that you've found someone.” Kris says.
Kris heads off to bed and Katie decides she should as well.

The wake-up call arrives and wakes the trio up.
“Looks like I've gotta go.” Kris says.
“Do we have to come too?” Damien asks.
“When you've just been transformed you get 3 days to get used to it. So you're allowed to stay here, and Katie is on afternoon shifts, so she's staying for a few hours.” Kris explains. “I better be going then.” He follows the guard down the corridor.
“At least they give us time off...” Damien says.
“Yeah, but they're in no way good people.” Katie tells him.
“I know... It... It hurt so much...” He returns to his curled up position which he was in last night.
“Hey, you're ok now,” She says, but gets no response.
She shuffles up to him and puts her arm round him. “I was talking to Kris last night and... Well...”
“Hm?” He says.
“I told him what I thought about you and...”
“What did you say.” He asks.
“I said you were cute, that's all.” She tells him. He blushes. “A... Re.... I... Am I?”
“Yeah. I think you need someone to love you, and so do I.”
“We all do...” He says and returns the hug. They sit for a while and then Victor comes in. “Hey Katie. Oh! New guy. Hi!”
Damien curls back up and buries his head in his arms.
“What's the matter with him?” Victor asks Katie.
“He's pretty shy.” She says and then turns to Damien. “It's ok, he's with us.”
Damien lifts his head up. “H... Hi...” He says.
Victor softens his tone. “Hi. So, what's your name? I'm victor.”
“Damien. I'm called Damien.”
“Okay.” He punches Damien lightly in the arm. “Don't worry. I'm gonna get us out of here. I'm thinking of something that might work.”
