In Which Nacho Dies
The next morning, Street was sitting in his chamber behind a desk, head in his hands. Phantom had vetoed his motion to search for Cameron The Great, but he just couldn't shake the idea from his mind.
Lain out before him was a map displaying Cirrus and Aphelia, and the land between. The two kingdoms had been at war ever since anyone could imagine, and nobody really knew why. If it were up to the Cirraneans, they would have made peace long ago, but the Aphelions constantly refused all forms of communication.
Street finally lifted his head from his hands, having made a decision, and picked up his quill. Dipping it in ink, he drew a very bold red arrow from Cirrus to Aphelia. They were done being sitting ducks, and now the Cirraneans would attack.
Pulling a handful of papers to the center of his desk, he spread them out. The next few hours were spent strategizing, drawing diagrams, examining the map, and analyzing all the previous Aphelion attacks (all of which he had carefully documented). He finally felt like he was getting somewhere when quite suddenly, the door to his study burst open, shattering the vase behind the door.
Street whirled and drew his spear, almost launching it and pinning the figure to the wall, but it was Nacho. Street lowered his spear and opened his mouth to speak, but Nacho spoke first. "Street, I think one of The Guard members--"
But he never got to finish that sentence. A black arrow flew through the doorway and went straight through Nacho's heart. Street knew he would die within seconds, but he grabbed a shield and rushed to the doorway just in time to see a shadowy figure in a gold cloak disappearing down an alley.
There was no use chasing him. Street bent down at Nacho's side, and examined the arrow. He looked Nacho in the eyes and, for the first time in his life, he saw tears. Of all the members of The Guard, he'd known Nacho the longest. But, choking on the lump in his throat, Nacho was frantically trying to tell Street something.
"What is it?"
Nacho coughed, and blood splattered out his mouth.
"Nacho buddy..."
And then he died.
Street stared at his body. And then he grabbed his spear, and he stood up sharply. He had just reached the door when Yoshi burst in.
"Street there you are, there's been a--" he stopped in shock when he saw Nacho's dead body, laying with an arrow in his chest and covered in blood.
"Is that...?"
Street nodded.
"Uh," still shocked, Yoshi forced himself to continue. "There's a small band of Aphelion warriors that slipped in, they're trying to take captives in the town square."
Without a word, Street dashed out the door. He'd make them pay for the blood of his friend.
Just outside, however, he found a small mob of Aphelions already gathered, making their way up the steps. "Yoshi, get out here," Street shouted. Max and Mike were fighting from the outside in, but they needed all the help they could get.
Doing a quick spin, Street shoved the head of his spear into an Aphelion's chest. Turning and jerking, he removed it, smashing the jaw and breaking the neck of another with the butt. He spun the spear by it's middle, catching the neck of one and launching him backwards into the crowd. Yoshi appeared a split second later, and tossed a handful of knives at once, felling the front lines.
But just as quickly as it had begun, Max fired his crossbow with a twang and pierced the last Aphelion through the throat.
