I personally use my Hauppauge capture card. My computer treats it like another monitor, so I don't lose any frame rate. Though, its hardly a free solution.

C'mon guys let's not suggest pirated software. Regardless of what your moral opinion of the issue is—there are quite a few developers here so I'd assume there's some appreciation of the work required to create software—it's against site rules because I'd rather not get into trouble. Thanks!

(Fraps really is a nice piece of software. It's not free but it's so much better than the free options out there—which universally suck, in my experience—I think it's worth the asking price. The other option is to look into getting a capture card. Also not free but will let you record anything without any performance issues.)

what exactly is so confusing about this question
and there's plenty of free and good video recording software. Like obs, which I already suggested.

If the someone asked "I just found out that I have cancer, what's the best natural remedy?" I would tell them to get chemotherapy. It may not technically answer the question, but it's how I'm going to respond anyway. Super extreme example, but you get my point.

I've had a bad experience with obs, but that was admittedly quite a while ago, so it may have gotten better since then.

I use Bandicam, and I can give you my paid copy for free if you wish. Here's my channel.
